Languages
The language policy at the University of Siegen focuses on multilingualism in the sense of a “culture of welcome”. While German remains the main language of teaching and research, the university expressly welcomes and expands its range of courses in other languages, especially English.
International students who wish to obtain a degree in German-taught programmes must provide proof of German proficiency at DSH-2 (or an equivalent qualification) (with DSH-3 recommended for some subjects); those who do not yet meet this requirement can apply for the university’s preparatory German courses (DSH track) and are linguistically prepared through the STARTING (Student Admission, Registration and Training in German Language) programme before beginning their German-language studies after passing the DSH-II examination. Language support is primarily provided by the Language Centre, which offers German as a foreign language (DaF/DaZ) and English courses, language tests and advice. In particular, the Language Centre offers DaF courses from A1 to C1 (parallel to the semester) for exchange students and international students, as well as English courses (A2–C1), specialist language courses and support with academic writing. Intercultural exchange is further promoted through initiatives such as language tandems and buddy programmes. More information here.
Academic Calendar
The academic year is divided into two semesters. There are:
- Winter semester: begins in October, ends at the end of March.
- Summer semester: starts in April, ends at the end of September.
Each semester has a period for regular examinations (or ‘first examination period’), which takes place shortly after the end of the courses. This is followed by a second examination period, usually for courses that are only offered in one semester (either winter or summer). - Holidays & Breaks
The university calendar includes breaks around Christmas (roughly late December to early January) and Easter / Holy Week (spring). Other non-teaching periods are national or regional holidays.

Admission description for full-degree students
Foreign students who acquired their university entrance qualification in Germany (educational residents)
Foreign applicants who have passed Abitur or a comparable university entrance qualification in Germany or at a German school abroad are called ”educational residents“. Educational residents must comply with the same admission requirements and deadlines as German applicants. For Bachelor's programs with admission restrictions, please apply for admission through the online Portal unisono. For programs with unrestricted admission, you may register via the online-portal unisono . For information about programs, which require a technical college certificate (Fachhochschulreife), click here. For all information about application and registration, please contact the Studierendensekretariat.
Foreign students who acquired their university entrance qualification abroad (educational foreigners):
Applicants who are EU nationals or nationals of the European Economic Area (EWR nationals) are regarded as equivalent to German applicants for the purposes of admission.

Application for Master programs in English:
Please note that there are different application procedures and deadlines for master's degree programs. For the international programs you apply via unisono. Find information for master's degree programs on the overview-website . There select "English" as language for English taught programs.
Arrangements for the recognition of credit and prior learning
Recognition:
If the verification process evaluates your previous education as equivalent to the German bachelor degree, you are qualified for university entrance to master programs (academic and English skills requirements will be evaluated in addition in the faculty)

Once nominations are accepted, students receive an invitation to apply online via moveon.

Policies
Campuses
The University of Siegen is not a traditional, self-contained campus university situated on a single site, but is spread across several key locations throughout the city. The university’s large main campus is located in Siegen-Weidenau (Haardter Berg). Set in green surroundings on a hill in the Weidenau district, it often offers a fine view over the Siegerland region. It comprises:
Adolf-Reichwein-Straße Campus (AR): featuring the Audimax, the Central Library, the large lecture theatres and the main canteen with its bistro. The humanities and social sciences, as well as parts of the natural sciences, are primarily based here.
Hölderlinstraße Campus (H): Just a few minutes’ walk from the AR Campus. Among other things, this is home to the ZIMT (Centre for Information and Media Technology), the Student Service Centre (SSC) and a further library area.
Paul-Bonatz-Straße Campus (PB): Also situated on the Haardter Berg, traditionally home to the engineering sciences (mechanical engineering, civil engineering, etc.).
The City Campus (Siegen-Mitte) consists of Unteres Schloss Campus (US) in the heart of the historic Upper Town, where Faculty III (Economics, Business Informatics and Business Law) is housed, including a modern canteen, and a lecture theatre complex. The North Campus (Friedrichstraße) & South Campus (Löhrtor) are located in the immediate vicinity of the Lower Palace and significantly expand the city centre campus.
Other sites include the Emmy Noether Campus (Departments of Physics and Mathematics) and the Artur Woll House (research facilities, conferences and knowledge transfer).
Uni-Express buses (UX routes) run regularly between the sites
